Freeman Lewis Files Title IX Retaliation and Sex Discrimination Lawsuit
on Behalf of Former Track and Cross-Country Coach
Against Central Connecticut State University

On November 1, 2011, Freeman Lewis LLP filed a lawsuit against Central Connecticut State University in Connecticut federal court on behalf of Brenda Webb, the former Women’s Track and Cross-Country Coach.  The suit alleges that CCSU engaged in unlawful retaliation under Title IX and sex discrimination under Title VII and Connecticut state law.  Specifically, the suit alleges that when Coach Webb asked CCSU to investigate the apparent sex discrimination in unequal budgets, lesser coaching resources and inferior facilities available to the women’s teams versus the men’s teams, CCSU responded by investigating her.  Coach Webb seeks no less than $2 million in damages.

In recent years, a number of female athletic coaches have successfully prosecuted Title IX retaliation claims.   Former coach Lindy Vivas obtained $5.2 million in a settlement with Fresno State, and former coaches Jaye Flood and Holly Vaughn obtained $3.4 million in a settlement with Florida Gulf Coast University.

We have successfully resolved a number of coach cases.  For example, in the late 1990s, in one of the early Title IX retaliation and sex discrimination cases, Jennifer Freeman successfully tried a case to verdict on behalf of Molly Perdue, the former Women’s Head Basketball Coach at Brooklyn College.   Jennifer has worked extensively with the Women’s Sports Foundation, and is known as one of the “go to” lawyers in the Title IX bar.
